Zimbabwe Marriages Bill Forum
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][vc_column_text]Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association (ZWLA), Women Lawyers of Southern Africa (WLSA) and the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) have teamed up to keep Zimbabweans informed about the Marriages Bill. They say: “The alignment process of marriage laws in Zimbabwe is yet to be finalised. This means that the conversation must continue. The Parliament of Zimbabwe has been keeping conversations around marriage laws alive. On the 11th of February 2020, the Minister of Justice, Legal & Parliamentary Affairs Hon. Ziyambi presented the Second Reading of the Marriages Bill. This was followed by the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee’s presentation of its report containing its findings and recommendations on the Bill. These findings are coming from the public consultations which were done in August 2019. On the 13th of February 2020 the National Assembly debated the Bill. Many Parliamentarians are concerned about the clauses on child marriages. The concern is that the legal age of consent to sex still remains 16. There are also concerns about the exclusion of property rights. The Bill only focuses on property distribution at dissolution however the Bill falls short in explaining how property rights are exercised during the subsistence of the marriage.” Keep yourself informed about the Marriages Bill on the ZWLA / WLSA / WCoZ Forum on Facebook here[/vc_column_text][/vc_row]
