More work needed on Covid 19, GBV
Q: Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world recently in celebrating International Women’s Day. How were this year’s commemorations different from previous years?
A: This year’s Women’s Day was different in the sense that we are celebrating it as we fight Covid-19 which has amplified the inequalities that women face on a day-to-day basis.
Vulnerable women receive timely support
WOMEN and Law Southern Africa (WLSA) has donated groceries worth thousands of dollars to 300 women across Mutasa District as relief package to vulnerable groups bearing the brunt of the Covid-19 pandemic.
WLSA legal officer, Ms Ivy Chimedza, said the donations are for vulnerable women and girls who are living with disabilities, HIV and Aids, survivors of sexual and gender based violence, widows and elderly women.
The National Development Strategy’s (NDS1) fight for women’s inclusion
It should come as no surprise that the women of Zimbabwe face a unique set of gender-based challenges that can make life extremely challenging.
One in four girls aged 15-19 is married, making secondary education difficult or merely impossible to attain. Lack of access to maternal health is another by-product of the hurdles women face. Maternal mortality affects 581 out of every 100,000 live births, and young women are twice more likely to be affected by HIV and AIDS than young men and boys. Additionally, women and girls face extensive spousal abuse and gender-based violence.
